Ooty: Taste the Mountain (F)are!

Updated: May 12

With summer temperatures increasing day by day, there are multiple ways one thinks of to ward off the heat- spend the entire day in air conditioning, have multiple baths on the same day or go to someplace cool to avoid the heat altogether. While one can’t leave their jobs altogether and go away for an indefinite amount of time, Ooty is one of the best places to spend 4 or 5 days to relax!

Nestled in the Nilgiris, Ooty is a quaint little town with a simple, laid back attitude which reminded me of Malgudi days. We stayed at Sinclairs Retreat- some distance away from the main city. The sunset from this property is beautiful! The hotel has a sundeck restaurant where visitors can relax, sip a cup of freshly brewed coffee & admire nature’s beauty. At a perfect temperature of about 16 degrees during the time we visited, enjoying kebabs on a grill & hot pakodas with chai was a ritual we followed at least 3 times a day. The hotel also had a picturesque swing at the edge of the hilltop that I utilized to the fullest!

One of the best experiences I had in Ooty was visiting the Place to Bee café- A small cosy restaurant offering “Slow food” or Food made from only organic materials. The hot chocolate here had a distinct & unique taste unlike any I have ever tasted before. The pasta & pizza were baked using freshly made dough & using vegetables grown in the premises.

There is a small boutique just below the restaurant that sells indigenously made cosmetics, teas, coffees, spices & handicrafts. The café décor was wooden & could seat only up to 5 or 6 tables at a time. Pictures of different kinds of honey bees, their habitats & information about their needs were hung on the wall. The service was excellent & made the leisurely afternoon experience even more satisfying.
